Equestrian Adventures South Point Adventure is an all day affaire encompassing a part of the island that few venture, and what better way to see it than by horseback! We guarantee a fun filled afternoon with an average of 2-3 hours of mounted ride/instruction. This ride is available for beginners, intermediate or advanced riders with the pace of the ride set in accordance to the individual expertise and control of your mount. Safety is our prime concern, as well as the utmost pleasure of your riding comfort. Your ride is furnished with a choice of either English or Western Tack, riding helmets are provided and highly recommended, but are optional. However, they are required for all non-adult riders. Riding jackets/raingear are also provided in addition to a snack breakfast and a BBQ lunch is served following the ride (meal plan is pre-arranged at our specification). For further details click here. About Volcano Ranch- All our horses are registered American Quarter Horses and are extensively trained and managed on a regular basis. These are the same horses which we regularly perform with in the local rodeos, parades, horse shows and other island wide equestrian events. Your Wranglers: Joan Prescott-Lighter- Joan Prescott-Lighter has lived in Volcano for almost 20 years and is the Innkeeper for Aloha Place- Inn of Volcano. Joan's equestrian skills were polished on the Eastern seaboard training, riding and showing Hunters, Show Jumpers and Steeplechasers. She competed professionally for over 12 years in Combined Training starting green horses Pre-Training Level through Preliminary and Advanced Level competitions. A Certified Riding Instructor of the American Riding Instructors Association, an Accredited and Certified Member of the American Society of Equine Appraisers and her B.A. in Horsemanship for Teaching/Training ensures an unsurpassed equestrian experience for all to enjoy. In Hawaii, Joan participates in everything from round-ups to Dressage. For the past seven years Volcano Ranch has been concentrating on breeding and raising several prospects of their own. General Trail Ride Information Confirmed Reservations are required 48 hours in advance and are secured with a Credit Card Guaranty. Visa, American Express, Discover and MasterCard are accepted. All riders are required to sign a pre-ride indemnity waiver due to insurance constraints. Cancellations- We require a 48 hour advance notice of cancellation to avoid FULL FARE charges of your reserved ride. These rides require an extensive amount of time to coordinate and scheduling of personnel hence No Shows and Late Notification of Cancellation will be charged FULL FARE of the reserved ride- NO EXCEPTIONS! Email to send inquiry, confirm or cancel to stay@alohaplace.com . Lessons are available and can be pre-arranged according to skill level usually within 48 hours. All instructors are ARIA Certified. Check-in Time- Meet at the pre-destined location at least 30 minutes prior to the scheduled departure of your ride. A 15 minute Pre-Ride Certification is required for all confirmed riders. During this time you will be introduced to your mount and provided with proper equipment and detailed safety instructions for your ride. Age and Physical Condition- Riders must be over 8 years of age and in good physical condition. Weight limit is 220 lbs. For your safety, we reserve the right to refuse anyone with whom we determine is in poor physical condition. Children aged 14 years and under must be accompanied by an adult. Children between the age of 14 and 18 must have written consent from a parent and ALL riders must sign a compulsory waiver. Tack and Apparel- We provide English or Western tack to your preference. We strongly recommend loose fitting long pants and closed toe shoes are a must (preferably with a heel). We do have several pairs of boots and shoes to loan but size is limited. For your safety and enjoyment we provide only ASTM approved helmets for all riders. Non-adult riders are required to wear helmets. Each horse is equipped with a pack to securely carry your camera gear and water bottle while on the trail. Experience- Rides are moderately safe for the first-time rider, as well as, the very experienced horseman. All Volcano Ranch rides will be modified as to overall experience level for the safety of all participants. Weather- Volcano is famous for it's intermittent showers. Rides go out rain or shine. However, in the event of inclement weather at the time of departure, outings may be rescheduled at our discretion. If the need arises to cancel your ride due to inclement weather, a full refund will be provided. History- Volcano Village came into being with the advent of sightseers to the calderas of Kilauea in the late 1800's. At first the old wealthy 'Kama'aina' (born in Hawaii) families established vacation homes in the area to escape the heat of Hilo and Honolulu during the summer months. Much later during World War II the military established Kilauea Military Camp on the edge of Kilauea Crater, bringing many visitors. Surrounding the Village of Volcano are several large ranches as well as, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which draws an many as 5,000 visitors daily. Today, Volcano Village is a close knit community made up mostly of artisans, retired Military Personnel, National Park employees, retired professionals and those seeking cool climates and volcanic activity at its finest! Volcano Ranch Lessons/Boarding Volcano Ranch offers both English and Western instruction with private, semi-private and group lessons for adults and children aged 7 and up. Applicants are required to wear ASTM helmets while mounted, long pants, closed toe shoes with a heel and be moderately physically fit. It is our goal to assure your safety in a friendly atmosphere to inspire your learning pleasure. We offer an environment whereby you will actually learn from the horse and what better way is there? Our instruction is based on 40+ years of hands on experience and is never ending! Lessons are offered in riding theory, cavaletti work, showmanship skills, basic care of the horse, jumping, grooming, how to properly tack up your mount, handling your first foal, how to lunge and long line your horse, basic ground work, skills needed for the 'first time' horse owner, general principles of horse management, proper trailering techniques, and much more. We offer all of this, with you and the horse in mind, whether it is on the ground or mounted, we quarantee you will walk away from your lesson with an appreciation of the equine spirit. Our facility is small scale, but most adequate, and is located within just a few minutes ride of unlimited trail miles within the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and surrounding area. We are about 30 minutes from Hilo and one hour from South Point for additional riding/training excursions. A month to month boarding contract is required for insurance. Volcano Ranch offers overnight stabling when you confirm a reservation at Aloha Place- Inn of Volcano. There is ample trailer parking and is a perfect occasion for a get away with your horse!
